Gila River Against Loop 202 (GRAL202) is a grassroots effort by Akimel O’odham from the Gila River Indian Community (GRIC) to save Muhadag Do’ag (South Mountain) from desecration and to also protect the overall health and environment of GRIC from the “proposed” South Mountain Loop 202 freeway extension.
GRAL202 directly opposes the South Mountain Freeway Loop 202 E1 Alignment (off-reservation) and GRIC Alignment.
In our efforts to stop the freeway, we have repeatedly come across clear instances where the option of NO BUILD as an outcome. This option was not clearly communicated to GRIC. The NO BUILD option will save Muhadag Do’ag, protect the overall health and environment of GRIC, and surrounding communities in the greater Phoenix Area that would be impacted by the freeway.
Our goals are to:
CREATE AWARENESS – We have gathered, compiled and shared the environmental and health effects the freeway would bring to GRIC. We have exposed the outside interests who want the freeway built, and raised concerns about what we might lose as O’odham if this freeway is built.
COME TOGETHER – We have held community meetings, distributed informative flyers and pamphlets at community events and attended GRIC forums, committees and tribal council meetings regarding the freeway. We have done this in hopes of bringing people together in the belief that NO BUILD is the best choice for the future of the Gila River Indian Community.
STOP THE SOUTH MOUNTAIN FREEWAY! - Please visit our Ways to Support tab for further info - We will use this site and other direct means to make GRIC members aware on why we should vote NO BUILD on the February 7, 2012 South Mountain 202 Referendum and to ask the Maricopa Associations of Governments Transportation Policy Committee and Arizona Department of Transportation to release the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for public comment.
